“I am a rapper, not a gangster. I wish for peace, but train for combat. I am a scholar in modern academics, but have a foundation in indigenous thought. All of these contradictions embody who I am as a person, and all of these things can be found in my music. When I look back at the past ten years of my music, I see both evolution, and contradiction. That’s alright with me. I want to make great music, powerful music, and I want to leave a mark.” Prolific has been recording music for 10 years, is multiracial and multicultural (Mexican, Lakota, Caucasian), is a member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, and grew up in a single parent household, moving frequently around the state of South Dakota. He graduated with honors while studying Philosophy, History, and Sociology, while at the same time struggling with alcohol, drugs, and drug dealing. He says “My name is Shawn, I could tell you that I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, including selling drugs, a lot of partying, and womanizing, and that I refuse to glorify this period of my life. I could come from any number of angles to give you a “cool guy” image like most rappers do; instead I’ll tell you how I evolved as an artist.
